Solar Installation Status Updates: Permits, Utility and PTO
The problem
After signing, solar customers often wait weeks or months before the system can be turned on. Design, permitting, installation, inspection and utility interconnection approval (often called permission to operate) each take time, and much of it is outside the installer's control. Customers who don't hear anything assume something is wrong.
The challenges
- Many stages. Each stage depends on a different party.
- Utility timelines. Interconnection approval varies by utility.
- Permit backlogs. Local jurisdictions have their own timelines.
- Financing documents. Loans or leases add steps.
- Sales promises. Timelines given at sale may not match reality.
Opportunity cost of the status quo
Customers who feel left in the dark file complaints, cancel or leave poor reviews. Office staff spend time on status calls.
Illustrative arithmetic, not data: if an installer has 50 projects in progress and each customer calls weekly for an update, that is about 200 calls a month.
Industry solutions
Stage-based updates. Notify customers when each stage is completed.
Realistic timelines. Give ranges based on recent local experience, not best cases.
Explain who controls each step. Name the utility or jurisdiction responsible.
Document tracker. Show what the customer still needs to sign or provide.
Explain PTO. Tell customers not to turn on the system until approval is received, as the utility requires.
